locked Summer Launches!

Mike Nowak

Someone finally turned on the switch for warm, more ideal flying weather and it is time to take advantage!

Here is what it coming up at Harmon Flying Field:

June 10 - club sport launch noon to 6 PM

June 24 - sport launch and Last Chance Midwest Regional Meet from 10 AM to 6 PM

This is a chance to fly some fun and interesting contest events.  B Streamer Duration is as it sounds - maximum duration flight with a model flown with a B motor recovering on a streamer.  B Eggloft altitude - same.  C payload - fly a NAR payload (1 ounce of sand in a cylinder 3/4 inches in diameter, 2 inches long) to the highest altitude.  Precision fragile payload - think TARC.  Fly an egg to 300 meters and keep it in the air for 60 seconds.  Twice.  Don't break the egg!  You are scored for being closest to the two targets.  Hint:  there are two off the shelf kits that will work - Estes Partizon and North Coast Bounty Hunter.  Finally, Concept Scale - models of things that haven't flown in reality.  Think SLS, X Wing, etc.

July 8 - sport launch noon to 6 PM

July 22 - sport launch noon to 6 PM

August 12 - sport launch noon to 6 PM  with TWO scout troops launching their models!

August 26 - sport launch noon to 6 PM

We are go for launch tomorrow, June 10, at the Harmon Flying Field.  Launch begins at Noon, however we will be there earlier to set up.  With southwest winds we will most likely be setting up next to the pavilion.  Please do not park next to the pavilion if you get there early, and please leave the space open for the guy with all the launch gear.

Protect yourself from environmental hazards.  Please remember to pack yourself some water and wear sunscreen.  If your rocket drifts into the high grass or bushes, appropriate clothing is highly recommended.  Wear long pants and boots.  Leave the shorts and sandals for some other activity.  Avoid poison ivy, and watch out for ticks.

We are go for launch tomorrow, Saturday, May 27.  Flying begins at 10 AM.  In addition to our usual sport launches, we will be hosting the Ray Harmon Regional Meet, an NAR Sanctioned Competition.  Events include Sport Scale, 1/2A BG, A HD and B Eggloft Altitude. Another event is sport landing, which means that the person who lands their model closest to the target wins.  EVERYONE CAN COMPETE.  To encourage participation, there will be kits, motors and maybe even a Chute Release for winners!  It costs nothing more than your normal launch fees and some additional paperwork.  In addition, lunch will be provided on the field!  Come on out for a fun day of flying!

locked Grillin' at the 27 May Launch

Brian

My brother and I will be bringing hamburgers and hotdogs to the launch tomorrow and grilling.  If you would like to purchase a dog or burger with chips and drink, it will be $3.  Please try to bring exact change, though I will have some change.

locked Chagrin Falls 5th Grade Club Launch

Mike Nowak

Guys,

It is once again time for the Chagrin Falls 5th grade rocket club launch. Every year about 30 5th graders work after school for two weeks to build Estes rockets for a Saturday launch. With three motors each, we normally get 80+ launches starting at 9a. I usually arrive 40 minutes early to set up a perimeter, the 6-pad launcher, and gear. The kids have a great time. Many of them launching rockets for the first time.

The field is small (behind the Middle School, which is on the High School property on East Washington Street just outside of Chagrin Falls). The weather is supposed to be spectacular. As always, I appreciate any help that anyone is willing to lend. There is plenty to manage: kids in line, kids at the pad, kids loading rockets, etc... This year, both of my adult children are out of town. In years past, there have been demonstration flights, but low and slow is the name of the game.

If anyone would like additional details, please contact me via email: farrw@...

The flip side of that is the traffic crossing the runway when recovering models that are launched from the pavilion area.

It is easier to tell people to walk around the runway when going up to the pads than to remind them on every flight.

I will be there to help setup. If we need to put the gear in my car to get it to the launch pad area then that's what we do.

I think this will be the only launch where we need to worry about it.

A request was made to make sure that we use the rocket pad area to keep foot traffic on the runway to a minimum.

So please setup the equipment on the rocket pad area. Also unless a model lands on the runway please do not walk on the runway.

This request is only a temporary restriction until the runway is compleyely settled and tight. About 2 to 4 weeks should do it.

Thank you all.

Thanks, Bob.  We will do our best to deal with the new runway.  Given the winds coming out of the North, setting up close to the parking lot and runway is a bad idea anyway.  We'll work things out.
