locked Group History

Mark Recktenwald

This group replaces the MTMA Yahoo Group that was previously used as one of several means of communication between MTMA members. The Groups service has not been well-maintained by Yahoo and has not been performing to our expectations.

The MTMA Yahoo Group was itself a conversion of our email list maintained on a service called eGroups. Yahoo’s acquisition of eGroups was completed during the Winter of 2001. The MTMA eGroup was a replacement for the email address lists manually maintained by the officers of MTMA.

The original list was nothing more than a few email addresses of some guys who were posting messages on the Usenet Newsgroup news://rec.models.rockets (RMR) and decided to get together to fly some rockets. Seven flyers and their families attended our first launch on May 16, 1999. As other area rocketeers were found on RMR, they were invited to join. By the end of 1999, we decided to form our own NAR section. The moderator's personal web page was expanded and an area added for the MTMA web page. A form was placed on the web page for folks to enter their email address. It said: "If you live near Kent and wish to join us for our next launch, enter your name and email address in the boxes below and click Subscribe. Your email address will be added to our distribution list." That list grew to over 60 members and was a bit unwieldy for to maintain and update.

locked What is MTMA?

Mark Recktenwald

The Mantua Township Missile Agency (MTMA) is Section #606 of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR). We are a group of rocketeers in the greater Kent, Ohio area. Our gatherings are informal, family-oriented “rocket-picnics”. Most of us have children, and they are encouraged to participate. We usually hold launches on the second and fourth weekends of each month. For any weekend of a scheduled launch, the launch is planned for Saturday with Sunday as a rain date.

Additional information about our club, launch rules, launch sites, and scheduled launch dates may be found on our web page at: http://www.mtmarocketry.org/

Edited

The MTMA group was created as a way of notifying its members of MTMA events, news, etc. Anyone who is interested in rocketry in the northeast Ohio area can join the group. It doesn't matter if you belong to one of the many rocketry organizations or not.

Messages posted to MTMA@groups.io will be automatically sent to all members of the MTMA group.

locked Summer Launches!

Mike Nowak

Someone finally turned on the switch for warm, more ideal flying weather and it is time to take advantage!

Here is what it coming up at Harmon Flying Field:

June 10 - club sport launch noon to 6 PM

June 24 - sport launch and Last Chance Midwest Regional Meet from 10 AM to 6 PM

This is a chance to fly some fun and interesting contest events.  B Streamer Duration is as it sounds - maximum duration flight with a model flown with a B motor recovering on a streamer.  B Eggloft altitude - same.  C payload - fly a NAR payload (1 ounce of sand in a cylinder 3/4 inches in diameter, 2 inches long) to the highest altitude.  Precision fragile payload - think TARC.  Fly an egg to 300 meters and keep it in the air for 60 seconds.  Twice.  Don't break the egg!  You are scored for being closest to the two targets.  Hint:  there are two off the shelf kits that will work - Estes Partizon and North Coast Bounty Hunter.  Finally, Concept Scale - models of things that haven't flown in reality.  Think SLS, X Wing, etc.

July 8 - sport launch noon to 6 PM

July 22 - sport launch noon to 6 PM

August 12 - sport launch noon to 6 PM  with TWO scout troops launching their models!

August 26 - sport launch noon to 6 PM

We are go for launch tomorrow, June 10, at the Harmon Flying Field.  Launch begins at Noon, however we will be there earlier to set up.  With southwest winds we will most likely be setting up next to the pavilion.  Please do not park next to the pavilion if you get there early, and please leave the space open for the guy with all the launch gear.

Protect yourself from environmental hazards.  Please remember to pack yourself some water and wear sunscreen.  If your rocket drifts into the high grass or bushes, appropriate clothing is highly recommended.  Wear long pants and boots.  Leave the shorts and sandals for some other activity.  Avoid poison ivy, and watch out for ticks.

We are go for launch tomorrow, Saturday, May 27.  Flying begins at 10 AM.  In addition to our usual sport launches, we will be hosting the Ray Harmon Regional Meet, an NAR Sanctioned Competition.  Events include Sport Scale, 1/2A BG, A HD and B Eggloft Altitude. Another event is sport landing, which means that the person who lands their model closest to the target wins.  EVERYONE CAN COMPETE.  To encourage participation, there will be kits, motors and maybe even a Chute Release for winners!  It costs nothing more than your normal launch fees and some additional paperwork.  In addition, lunch will be provided on the field!  Come on out for a fun day of flying!

locked Grillin' at the 27 May Launch

Brian

My brother and I will be bringing hamburgers and hotdogs to the launch tomorrow and grilling.  If you would like to purchase a dog or burger with chips and drink, it will be $3.  Please try to bring exact change, though I will have some change.
